COMPAK ATTAK 2009 - WSID
Click to enlarge March 15,2009 ushered in a new era for the Sport Compact Group with the first of their two events for 2009, Compak Attak,of which PAC PERFORMANCE were to be a major contributor. 15 PAC cars showed to race among the seven Sport Compact classes available.
Rocky was back in the seat of the formidable Mazda 6, in Pro Turbo, to get some more track time and hone the diamond in the crown a little closer to perfection. Some very promising 1.06 sixty foot times and a respectable pass of 7.1@194mph in the new combination were to result, before the car came across data logging problems which forced the team to put the car away for the day.
With George sitting out this meeting, but acting as crew chief after the MX6's recent NZ tour, it was time for the youngest brother of the Rehayem triumvirate, Rodney, to battle in Pro Compact, which he did with such effect, a series of high 7 second second passes earned a final battle with fellow PAC customer, Anthony Daquino who had driven his immaculate low slung RX3, brilliantly all day. At the start of the race, Rodney's yellow RX3 went into a violent wheel stand, resulting in a harsh left turn into the left lane and conceding defeat to Anthony, winner on the day of the Pro Compact class.
Sam Sadek, the self-proclaimed 'Godfather' was back in his newly painted Red and Black RX3 and driving as only Sam knows how to a series of low 7 second passes in the 180mph zone and a semi-final berth in Pro Turbo. Victory was not to be Sam's, but the car's new livery was the cause of much discussion and head-turning on the day!!
Ivan Skaramuca was there to do battle in Pro Turbo, in his immaculate ceruse RX3,but unfortunately Ivan's day started much as it has of late, with disappointment on the track, caused by undetected mechanical 'Gremlins' which were defeated by the tireless efforts of his crew. Ivan was back, with a series of mid 7 second passes which has him heading in the right direction and giving him much hope of being back at the top of the tree.
Rob and Dale Stanbury's ex PACMAN RX3, had a day they may rather forget in Pro Turbo, with a faulty injector causing a massive fire on the start-line, the on-board extinguisher deployed and a hurried exit from the car by Rob. Hopefully the damage caused by the fire is not too severe and Rob and Dale are back before too long.
Jim Magliveras in Pro Compact was little short of a sensation on the day in the 13B powered Corolla, running in the high seven second zone consistently, but despite Jimmy's efforts, he would fail to make the final on the day.
In the Street 289 class, it was left to the 'fastest accountant in Queensland', Damien McKern in the GRUMP2, RX2, to fly the PAC PERFORMANCE flag, and fly it he did !! He flew it with such gusto that it disappeared in clouds of white tyre smoke to the extent that a pair of rear tyres, were sacrificed in the 'quest for the grail'!! Driving a controlled and calculated meeting saw him alongside Wayne Dyson, in the final, and in this match-up, Damien would emerge triumphant. Go the GRUMP!!
The Modified Compact class saw more PAC customers, Fred Sadek, Jamil Jafaar, and new boy Karl Neil, face the starter and while Jamil would take out Wheelstand of the event it was left to Fred and Karl to progress to the semi-finals. Fred, in the RX3,( campaigned long and hard over more than a decade by his Uncle, Sam Sadek), would on this occasion progress no further than the semi's, but Karl in a new car,( a beautiful RX2) and in his first major meet, managed an unbelievable runner-up in the class, with a p.b of 9.6@140mph!!! Awesome effort Karl.
In the Street Compact class, PAC PERFORMANCE was represented by the venerable RX4 Coupe of Father and son team, John and Russell Archer, who once again excelled themselves in a large field of 63 competitors, to emerge runners - up, in arguably the hardest class to win. Consistency and repeatability will see you through in such racing and the Archer's had both. Congratulations Russell and John.
An unusual addition to the PAC team was Vince Santoro in his white XW Ford Falcon. The newly fuel injected V8 Falcon carved through the Extreme field to take the winner’s trophy with ease. An enormous achievement given this was Vince’s second outing in the car. Congratulations Vince and welcome to the team.
With the addition of the APSA cars to add another dimension and colour to the event, it would appear to be an unbridled success, with both the competitors and fans,
and evidence of the changing face of Drag-racing in Australia.
PAC PERFORMANCE is proud to be part of this change and continues to present a package that is cutting-edge on any stage in the world scene. The next Major event will be the NITRO CHAMPS at WSID-Sydney 1-3 May.
See you all there.
