PAC POWER PREVAILS at the 2010 Winternationals

The 2010 Winternationals were celebrating the 25th anniversary of the track coming into existence, and as if to acknowledge that fact, the weather put on four absolutely perfect Drag Racing days. This would also be the stage on which the two elder Rehayem Brothers, Rocky and George would celebrate their first head to head racing in 10 years. George would be in the tried and true MX6 and Rocky, the world record setting Mazda 6. PAC PERFORMANCE would also be represented by long time customer Damien McKern in his instantly recognizable green 20B powered RX2, GRUMP2.

Rocky and George would be racing in PRO FX, a newly formed Group 1 class, and Damien would be headlining the Group 2 class of SuperCompact, as both competitor and bracket sponsor !!

The PAC team arrived on the Wednesday before competition was due to start , allowing plenty of time to set up in the Castrol enclave, alongside such illustrious competitors as Victor and Ben Bray. Also along to experience the carnival that is The Winternationals, was the team from Mazda Australia who would chronicle the event for the first time, producing a very professional video, and posting it on their website directly after returning to homebase. Welcome Mazda, we all hope you enjoyed yourselves and were impressed by the racing, especially those using your product. !!

Thursday saw the first of three qualifying rounds for SuperCompact, with Damien and GRUMP2, struggling a little with handling and traction, running an unrepresentative mid-eight second time, leaving the team with much to ponder. Friday's qualifier was put back until early evening, and Damien's commitments away from the track meant he would not make this round.

Friday provided the backdrop to the first appearance of Brothers Rehayem in the first qualifier of  PRO FX and a spectacular burnout display from both cars would result in Rocky crossing the line ahead of George with a 7.20 to 7.30 e.t. A promising start !!

Saturday started very cold with a relative altitude of -280ft, but the day was perfect as it warmed, and a massive crowd ensued. There would be 2 qualifiers for PRO FX and 1 for SuperCompact. A failed starter motor in Damien's pit caused some concern, but the generosity of fellow SuperCompact competitors Bryce and Ken Miller, with a replacement and some hurried work from the crew, saw the little green beast burst into life and take it's place in the staging lanes for qualifier 3. A better pass on this occasion would put 'The Accountant' 4th in the order and looking to eliminations come Sunday.

Rocky and George presented for the two Saturday qualifiers side by side again, both cars looking absolutely immaculate in the team colours. With George producing two huge burnouts to delight the capacity crowd, but harming the MX6's attitude after launching hard for the runs, Rocky was all business and piloted the Mazda 6 to a best of 7.0, with just a hint of clutch slip. Both cars would be back to do battle in eliminations on Sunday, finals day !!

Sunday was scheduled to conclude early, so after opening ceremonies at 10.00am it was down to business. As PRO FX was always scheduled to appear at the end of Group 1, the Rehayem Brothers fronted, but fortunately not drawn against each other, and both would progress to the second round. Rocky found himself matched with the Toyota Celica of NZ's Rod Harvey, but a clutch gremlin red-lit Rocky's chances of a win and his weekend was concluded. George won his round against the striking orange BMW with a very good reaction time, putting him in the semi-final against Ben Bray in the Toyota Scion. Another great light from George was not enough to hold a hard-charging Ben Bray, and George's weekend was done as well.

In SuperCompact, the four scheduled rounds were reduced to three and in the first, Damien took the win light with a p.b.7.97@150mph, getting off the throttle at the 1,000ft mark. His first 7 second pass, and the excitement was palpable with the large crowd on hand responding with clapping and cheering as the team drove down in front of the stands to tow him back.

Round two and this time another win against the immaculate RX3 of Ken and Bryce Miller, with both cars running p.b.'s, Damien running 7.91@177mph.

This brought up an all Rotor final with Damien's 20B RX2 pitted up against the Phil Laird prepared, Matt Lisle driven 20B RX7. Another great start saw the Gold Coast based Accountant never headed, with a blistering 7.86@180.84mph pass. This is a staggering performance for a car running on 28X9 tyres and weighing 2500lbs !!! This not only secured Damien a Gold Christmas Tree for winning SuperCompact, but another for taking out the National Championship, the Willowbank Track Championship, fastest ever e.t. and mph for a ST289 car, but also re-setting the ANDRA  e.t.. record for the class as well. Not only had Damien run his first seven second pass, he had improved it on the following two passes. An absolutely stunning and well deserved performance for a stalwart of the sport, who has been there through thick and thin and continues to support in both competition and sponsorship. Well done Damien and crew !!

So another Winternationals successfully completed and now the teams turn their attention to the Jamboree at Willowbank Raceway in August, with new benchmarks set, and sure to be contested.

The Team would once again like to thank their long-term valued sponsors in Castrol Edge, Turbosmart and Garrett, also thanking Mazda Australia for their attendance, and last but not least, the myriad of hardcore fans and supporters that came and watched during a great race meet.

Let's all do it again at The Jamboree at Willowbank Raceway 21/22 August, checkout www.sportcompact.net.au for more information.
