12A TERRORS - THEY'RE STILL OUT THERE...

You may not see them around much anymore but there still are a few 12A turbos out there causing a rukus and we so happened to have to have two fine examples in the workshop at the very same time receiving a few upgrades.

Both of these cars feature very similar setups and are great examples of how, like its bigger capacity brothers, the 12A can be a potent package with the right bolt-ons and tuning know-how.

Obviously both cars are running 12A blocks, the RX7 utilizing an adapted factory 13BT intake and the RX3 an IDA throttlebody setup. Turbo of choice is a Garrett 35/40, the RX3 sporting a new GTX version which is sized perfectly for the little 12A, producing excellent response while also offering great power potential.

Being street cars the last thing the owners wanted was to have sluggish around town performance and laggy engine response down low whilst out cruising; both of these setups are anything but that!

Whether you're putting the power through a manual box like the W58 in the RX3 or one of our popular 9-second Jatco auto packages like the RX7 is running, the power is there when you need it, driving like a dream from part to full throttle, low revs to redline...

Included in the work we've carried out on the cars was E85 fuel conversions, both featuring our bolt-in fuel tank and triple pump combos.

The ultimate in aftermarket street car fuel systems, both examples allow you to retain pretty much all of your original boot space and negate the need for noisy external pumps and surge tanks.

Fuel lines in both cars have been replaced front-to-back with high quality Ethanol compatible -8 braided lines with a Turbosmart FPR2000 FPR in charge of keeping fuel pressure where it needs to be.

Allowing safe tuning with both pump fuel and Flex Fuel Ethanol blends Haltech PS1000 ECUs and Flex Fuel sensors have been installed in both cars, providing Rocky with the necessary platform to tune the setups to perfection.

While we were busy equipping the RX3 with the goodies required to go fast we also hooked it up with new front brakes, our popular 10 inch upgrade with twin piston calipers giving ample clamping force to pull the car up swiftly.

As with all of the street cars we work on, time was taken to go over the finer details to ensure trouble free cruising. This includes making sure the authorities are kept happy by plumbing back BOVs and wastegates and fitment of our street legal shielded air filters.

Wicked-up both of these cars would be able to hold their own against their 13B counterparts, proving that the 12A is still a viable option for the performance enthusiast, especially for those with the smaller Mazdas and other early models which are restricted to the smaller capacity engines to pass engineers certification.

There are down-falls for the 12A unfortunately though with the biggest issue being the difficulty of finding parts for them and as a result the increased cost associated with building a 12A over the more common 13B; however to some car owners it is the only option when it comes to a legal turbo engine conversion in their particular model...
