19/11/14 WICKED WEDNESDAY OFF STREET MEET

This week's Wicked Wednesday Off Street Meet at Sydney Dragway saw racers treated to some much welcomed cooler temps. Three tough Pac streeters headed out for some fun, including Pac Performance media manager Jason racing his 13BT RX4 for the very first time. That's right, I swapped the camera and keyboard for my race suit and helmet and decided to get in on the fun this time!

Adam brought out WPN09Z for some testing with the new C4 combo and Shane from X-Trim was hunting for a PB in his neat RX7.

Picking up a healthy increase in power with the new C4 trans and converter combo, Adam and the boys were keen-as to put it to good use on the track.

After a few shakedown passes Adam left the line hard on his last run of the night, the recently-fitted wheelie bars getting a workout and flew down the strip for a 9.48@142 PB.

Heading out for the first time in my RX4 sedan with the recently upgraded 13BBP combo nerves were certainly running high. Although it was not the first time I have raced at Sydney Dragway, my previous 12.5@121 effort in my old manual RX7 would be a lot different to being behind the wheel of a car with a proven 9-second combo.

After bodging up the first burnout in true rookie style I managed a 11.08@98, backing off at the half as the engine note didn't sound quite right. Better to be safe than sorry.

The second run of the night 'd rather forget... This time the burnout was perfect but by putting so much focus on that part of my run I forgot to change back into first gear and like a fool, tried to take off in top gear. Not happy Jan!

After giving myself a stern talking to I lined up for the third pass which was much more productive. The burnout wasn't too bad and a half-decent launch resulted in a 10.77@126. Obviously I was pretty happy with that but even more-so when I realised that I had not adjusted the EBoost prior to the run, completing the pass on SP1, the lowest boost setting rather than SP3. A power difference of around 70rwhp!

Turning the car around for the last run of the night the nerves were somewhat subdued and I had my eyes set on a mid 10 or better. With SP3 selected and checked numerous times I once again botched up the burnout, hitting neutral and the rev cut...

Still determined to make up for it I staged the car, brought up the revs as far as they would go on the foot brake and rolled off the line with a dismal 1.8 sixty-foot and drove through for a 10.28@134.

Wrapped with the ET and speed for my first meet, driving the car on almost a 300km round trip from Wollongong and racing it exactly as it's driven on the street. I now can't wait to get back out there and chase down a 9-second pass off the foot brake before we hook up the trans brake and make things really interesting.

Shane cam out for a few runs in his sleek SA22 RX7, looking to make the most of the cooler air temps. Although the car suffered a few gremlins early on Rocky was able to get things sorted and Shane scored a new PB on his last run of the night, a solid 10.30@130

After the night was done, race plugs were swapped back for street ones and George whipped the wheelie bars off WPN09Z and all three cars drove home...In my case in the RX4, a 100km trek back to Wollongong...

As far as street cars go, these three examples are pretty damn tough!

Thanks to Cackling Pipes for the action shots!
