2013 FUCHS WINTERNATIONALS DAY 2 WRAP UP

Social media was going off after our first few passes with speculations that day two could be the day we bring the record back home, and wouldn’t you know, our first pass of the day delivered just that.

After our first round PB pass of 6.51@211, Rocky and the crew were happy that they had almost completely rectified the issue of the car pulling to the right just passed the sixty-foot mark, so the crew moved their attention to the clutch settings that we admittedly messed up on the previous pass.

Once again the Mazda6 SP drove out of the hole for an average 1.05 sixty-foot before a quick peddle by wheel-man George Rehayem seemed to sling-shot the car through the deep end for a 6.475@222.84; a new quarter mile world record for a rotary-powered vehicle!!

Celebrations were had when we made our way down to meet George down on the return road but with more rounds still to be run, it was back to work at our pit area to get the car ready for round three.

After analysing the data from the record pass Rocky decided among other things that a bit more clutch was in order as it was still slipping in the deep end and costing us precious MPH through the traps.

Lining up for round three we were hoping that the clutch adjustment would get the Mazda6 SP return to a sub one second sixty-foot and allow the car to power through the full pass however, tyre shake just passed the sixty saw George get off the gas then drive through for a 7.1@187.

From that point we had to wait and see what the other Factory Xtreme entrants could come up with before a finals match up was decided. Being a Chicago Shootout format there wasn’t the usual eliminations rounds and it came down to how many wins you got in R1-3 and your ET in the last round; the money round as it’s known in racing circles. We had three wins but unfortunately for us, that last pass cost us a ticket into the final as fellow rotary campaigner Archie Kajewski and Nissan man Scott Porter, who also had three wins a piece, ran quicker ETs in the third round; resulting in those guys heading to the final.

Although we were obviously disappointed that we didn’t progress further and come away with the class win, we still see the event as a huge success, not only because we re-set the record but we also gathered invaluable data and made changes that worked and that will aid us in the future.

This exhibition running of the Factory Xtreme class at the 2013 Fuchs Winternationals, from all accounts was a huge success. All the racers put on an awesome show for the massive crowd and really highlighted this new and exciting class of racing.

Even the die-hard old-school racers and fans are showing increased interest in our new-age high-tech race cars which can only be seen as a good thing for Factory Xtreme and the sport as a whole. The Factory Xtreme pit area was chockers each day with people checking out the cars, the race team setups and wanting to chat and take photos with the favorite drivers and cars. The kids especially loved it!

Damien McKern had a bit more luck this time around getting the 20B RX2 off the line without blazing the tyres but still spent the rest of the pass skating around, turning the tyres.

One huge surprise was the time that flashed up on the board when the car crossed the line; 6.81@8mph.... Either Damien pulled off something out of this world on those little 28x9 tyres or it was a timing error…We’re thinking it’s the latter…

Unfortunately GRUMP2 didn’t get to race again as bad weather on the Monday saw event organiser make the call to abandon the running of the ‘finals day’.

Overall for the team here at Pac Performance it was a long and eventful weekend, one that we will remember for a long time.
