With 35+ degree temps forecast for all three days of the event we always knew this years Australian Nationals would be a challenge and in the end it was indeed just that. Heading out of Friday for our three qualifying passes the idea was to wind the car back some-what and run to the conditions.
Our first run of the day ended up being our best for the event with the car driving down the 400 meters for a 6.78@209.
As you can see in the clip it was a clean pass and although it was quickest in the class going into Q2 it was not really where we wanted to be.
After downloading and going through the data from the Haltech a few adjustments were made and we headed back out for Q2.
Our next run the car left the line hard and the run looked promising however the gearbox slipped out of gear on the crucial second-to-third shift ending in an aborted pass.
Before heading into our last qualifier the box was removed and checked over and the clutch adjusted. With temps having dropped a little at this time we were now looking to get out there and put some numbers on the board...
Unfortunately one our Q3 pass a split wastegate vacuum line resulted in boost spike off the line which in turn saw the car rattle the tyres hard out of the hole and George buttoned off at the sixty-foot mark.
Moving onto Saturday our bad luck unfortunately continued for our first round pass in the afternoon with the Mazda6 SP's starter motor deciding to fail in the staging lanes. Not how we wanted our day to end but that's racing and these things happen.
Danny and the crew from Custom Bodyworks were also at the track with their crazy blown Hemi Outlaw 10.5 Valiant, looking to have some fun in the Supercharged Outlaws class.
Having only driven the car a handfull of times in the 3 meetings he's done, Danny is still getting the hang of steering this wild beast and as you can see in this image his concentration levels are are an all-time high as his crew push the car into the staging lanes prior to his first pass of the day...
What Danny didn't know at this time is that he would need all of his wits about him during this particular pass...
The big Val left the line hard and straight, looking like it was on a mission.
Moving to half track, on the gear shift the car literally blazed the 10.5W tyres and sent Danny on the ride of his life!
After cutting accross into the opposite lane Danny pulled her back, the big girl tipping over onto two wheels before crossing back into his own lane and heading towards the wall. After some skillful hand work as you can see in this clip with in-car footage thanks to the Sony Action Cams, Danny managed to save the car with a series of tank-slappers; left-right-left-right-left-right in an effort to keep the car off the wall and on all four wheels.
Certainly a ride Danny won't forget in a long time!
Luckily his hard work paid off, the car only suffering some fairly minor scuff marks. A lot better than what could have been...Luckily for Danny he knows a good panel guy ;)
After turning around for Q2 only to have an engine backfire ruin their efforts the team came out with something to prove for Q3.
With the tyres warmed up nicely thanks to a killer burnout by Danny the guys staged him up and the car blasted out of the hole for a 6.77@197 PB. A great way to end a very trying day at the track!
Come Saturday the boys came back out and went even quicker with a 6.74@207 even with Danny backing off early! A result that put a smile back on Danny's face!
Unfortunately as you can see in this clip Danny didn't come home with the win and subsequently the event was over for the team but walking away with the car in once piece and a new PB the guys were real happy!
