2015 Sydney Jamboree - Sydney Dragway

As the first major event of the new year, Sydney Jamboree is always a major draw card for sport compact racers around the country and as always we had a large number of customers partake in the day's racing action.

Amongst our group, testing his freshly-rebuilt R100 'STUTTA' for the first time was Luke Philps. The car which has been raced in the past but with a naturally aspirated 13B had been as quick as 11.1 down the quarter however, the new setup, featuring a Garrett GTX42-fed bridgeport 13B and C4 combo is a whole new animal which Luke would have to get the hang of quick-smart, having only picked up the car a few hours before his first pass of the event.

With full confidence in the setup and Luke's ability to steer, the car was set to kill-mode right from the start and Luke nailed a seriously-impressive 9.05@150 pass straight off the trailer. Luke would then followed it up with a 8.94@152, backed up with an 8.89@150; the car on a mission and running like clock work. As the rounds continued Luke continued to race through to the semi finals in the PRO289 class, a great effort for a new car debut!

Another car returning to the track after a short break was GODRX2, driven by Dom Perri. With a few upgrades being carried out during the cars recent makeover Dom and the boys were keen to finally chase down that elusive 8-second time slip, ready to give it all it's got to make it happen and after a lazy 9.2 pass in the morning, the time board lit up with an 8.92@150...

After three and a half years of hard work and determination, Dom had achieved his long term goal and to make it official, he then proceeded to back that run up with not one by two more eight second passes in the afternoon, much to the team and his crews joy!

Eight second passes seemed to be the order of the day for the small tyre guys with Hady El Bacha also dipping into the eights for the first time in his 'Backyard Bandit' RX3. Just like Dom, Hady started his day off with a low 9-second pass before breaking out the big guns for his second run, flying down the strip to the tune of an 8.97@150.

Andrew Toet is another customer who has also been banging on the door of an 8-second ET for some time now in his small tyre RX3 streeter. Throughout the day, as with the past few meets Andrew has attended with the car, traction issues off the line have hurt the cars 60-foot times and ultimately the cars ET.

Andrew put down a number of low nines in qualifying and a new PB 9.06@148 late in the day but once again the elusive 8-second pass would have to wait for another day. Good things come to those who wait Andrew and you'll have your day real soon don't worry!

Lee Docherty returned to the track in his 13BT-powered MX5 after a short break from racing and after a few shake-down passes things were looking positive for Lee and his crew moving into the afternoon.

Unfortunately though, after running a solid 7.47@181 the MX5 got crossed up in the deep-end, crossing to the opposite side of the track and coming into contact with the wall...

Thankfully Lee was unhurt in the incident and the car, although looking a bit worse-for-ware on the outside looks to be repairable. We had our Sony Action Cam on-board which captured the impact and you can see the video clip HERE

Russel Archer was out again, piloting the families immaculate RX4 coupe to a series of mid nines including an impressive 9.43@139 best for the day despite traction issues doing nothing to for the cars 60-foot times. This did nothing to faze the crew though with consistency being higher on their priority list than dropping their overall ET.

The Gibbo Brothers Racing ute was out putting on a show for the crowd as usual with some impressive wheels-up launches. Although the guys had a few niggling issues with the car on the day YAMUMA still put down a number of easy 9-second passes.

One car that everyone was keen to see strutting it's stuff was the 20B monster RX3 of Sam 'the Godfather' Sadek. After his impressive return to the track at last month's private test meet there was plenty of people in the crowd keen to see the car make a return to the 6-second zone.

After tuning the tyres the length of the track for a last 7.61@181 in the morning and getting out of shape off the line on his second qualifier, clutch gremlins saw the car sit out for the remained of the event. Unfortunate yes, but in the end, all part of racing and no doubt Sam will be out again real soon.

Andrew 'The Dentist' Maratos kicked things off with a great run in the morning, the 13B RX3 stretching its legs for an easy 7.19@192. A loose pass later on in the day and some bogging issues off the line would unfortunately hold the car back from performing at its best for the remainder of the event though.

Queen St's 20B BMW is an animal that's proving too wild for driver Mohammed to tame. Despite it's wild ways the car put down some solid launches on the day and will no doubt improve with some more chassis tuning and driver confidence.

Overall while this year's Sydney Jamboree was a bit of a mixed bag in terms of results however there was plenty of positives that came out of it for the team and our customers and that's always a good thing. If you weren't fortunate to get out to the event yourself, we've put together a little compilation clip here highlighting some of the action you missed out on...

While we were unable to bring the Mazda6 SP out this time around due to a few R&D projects still under way we're looking forward to testing in the coming months so keep an eye out on our Facebook page for updates.

Thanks to Cackling Pipes as always for the race snaps
