BEHIND THE BLING - UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE QUEEN ST RACING GOLD PLATED BMW

Without a doubt, the Queen St Group's crazy gold plated BMW drag car has been one of the most followed and anticipated builds in the past few years, from it's time doing the show rounds in 2010/11 to the cars driveline rebuild at Pac Performance which has taken place over the past eight months.

Now that the latest stage of the cars evolution has been completed and the car is set to make its race debut very soon, we figured we would give you guys a quick behind the scenes look at what's behind the bling in this state of the art drag car.

Long gone is the 4-rotor 26B show piece that is now being used as part of a coffee table in someones house and in its place is a full-house Pac-spec 20B equipped with a host of performance-proven components; a combo tried and tested in our very own 6-second Mazda6 SP.

Quality performance products from well known Australian manufacturers including Garrett, Turbosmart and Haltech feature predominantly throughout the car, each item being carefully selected by the team here at Pac Performance with years of track time backing them up. Also showcased throughout the car is the a large amount of custom fabrication, all completed in-house.

When we fired up the 20B a few weeks ago the hype shot to a whole new level and although the majority of the hard work had now been completed some of the most most important work was yet to come.

Last week the BMW was bolted up to our hub dyno where tune master Rocky spent several hours fine tuning the tune via the Haltech ECU, setting parameters and getting the big 20B all settled in and ready to rumble.

With all the basics covered Rocky moved onto the first set of power runs to allow him to monitor and fine tune the higher RPM ranges and boost curve.

The sound emitting from the methanol-slurping 20B is sublime as the Garrett turbo spools up and the revs heads for the sky; the setup running like clockwork as it spun the dyno to a lazy 1200hp.

Unfortunately a gearbox issue held the car back from attending its first shakedown meeting last weekend but the boys are on the job, working hard to get car on track as soon as possible.

Good things come to those who wait and when building a car of this caliber the last thing you want to do is rush. When the time comes though for the car to hit the track you can rest assured that the whole world will be given the heads up via the Pac Performance and Queen St Group's Facebook page, so be sure to keep an eye out for the announcement...
