There was no doubt at all that switching the Jamboree event back to a one day format would deliver a more action-packed event with cars on track almost the entire day giving the crowd exactly what they came to see; top quality drag racing!
Once again the Pac Performance team made the long trip north to Willowbank Raceway with the Mazda6 SP in tow along with a few customer cars flying the Pac flag proudly.
At first things were a bit sketchy with many racers concerned that the recent wet weather may continue and put a dampener on the event but alas, in true Queensland style the clouds were sparse and we were welcomed by blue skys and sun throughout the day.
As soon as we set up and the spectator gates opened, right until they closed at the end of the night our pit area was inundated with supporters, keen to get an up-close glance at the new-look Mazda6 SP and score a bargain at our merchandise stand.
After a huge effort from the team and our support crew, especially Danny and his team at Custom Bodyworks and a lot of late nights by all we were excited to finally show off the new-look Mazda6 SP to the masses and get back on track.
The awesome feedback we received about the car had the whole team on a high, including George who has been busting to get back in the drivers seat. Lining up for the first of two qualifiers the boys treated it as a shakedown to make sure everything was running as it should, producing a solid 6.60@202 off the trailer.
Before sending George on his way for run number two, Rocky made a few tweaks to Haltech ECU much to Georges delight.
The result, a skatey but flying 6.39@223.25; a new World Record speed for a rotary powered vehicle over the quarter mile!
A great start to the event for the team and definitely something worth celebrating!
Turning the car around as quickly as possible to make the first round of Chicago shootout we headed out again, this time lining up against Kiwi Rod Harvey in his 2JZ Celica. This pairing always delivers jaw dropping action with both George and Rod feeding off each other as they try their hardest to be the one to come out on top...
This time around it would be our competitor that walked away with the PB, Rod running a blistering 6.169@222. Unfortunately our luck didn't continue on this pass, George driving through the clutch for the entire run resulting in a 6.49@215 with the shift light on the whole pass...
Prior to heading out for the next pass the gearbox was removed from the car and checked over while Rodney cut the clutch plates with everything given the all-clear.
Being Chicago Shootout format we needed to get back on top of things for the second round in order to keep ourselves in the running for a spot in the factory Xtreme final. Once again luck would not be on our side though with tyre shake off the line leading to George having to pedal the car before getting slightly out of the grove in the deep end and rolling through the traps for a 6.77@196.

With the event win now out of reach and track conditions expected to deteriorate an appearance for our last pass was up in the air however as time progressed and the late night dew held off the decision was made to quickly turn the car around and head back out.
Hoping to make up for the last two passes George was on point ready to go. It seemed though once again as has happened in the past at Willowbank the 2-step flame tripped the staging beams causing the car to red light, catching Georges eye as he left the line. Getting skatey mid track George decided it would be best to roll off the throttle. "No point tearing the car up for no reason, we'll save it for Sydney." - George.
You can check out all of the Mazda6 SP's passes in the clip below with loads of angles thanks to our new
Sony Action Cams.
The Gibbo Brother's Racing crew headed up to Willowbank with their 9-second 1000 Ute 'YAMUMA', hoping to inch closer to that elusive 8-second time slip. The featherweight utility has improved nearly every meet it has attended since the installation of on of our 9-second Jatco transmission package a few months back, proving once again just how perfectly the whole setup works.
Straight off the trailer the guys put down a new PB 9.32@142 before later backing that up with an even quicker 9.29@142 pass, both of which were far from perfect runs as you can see in the clip below...
Russel Archer and his crew have been struggling with traction issues off the line in their RX4 of late and their luck didn't change on the weekend. Despite power being pulled out for the event in an effort to overcome the issue the car continued to turn the tyres hard on each pass...
Late in the day though with even more start line power pulled out of the car it hooked up with the car nailing a PB 9.39@139 on its last pass of the day. Slightly off-pace on the trap speed but a PB ET none the less...
The team will now be looking into some rear end adjustments to try and get this bad boy to bite the track and make use of the full 500+hp the Bridgeport combo is pumping out
It was great to have Lee Docherty out racing again after a long break in his 13BT MX5; the car having undergone a few modifications in the past months...
Testing the updated setup Lee managed a best of 7.5@178 which is certainly a positive step towards improving on the cars previous 7.4 second performances...No doubt once all the bugs are sorted the car will dip deeper into the sevens.
Queensland local Damien McKern put on a show for the crowd all day with a host of massive smokey burnouts in his 20B RX2 'GRUMP2'. Always a crowd favourite his efforts were rewarded with cheers from grandstands...
Damien went through a few start line issues on the day, including the usual lack of traction Mr McKern has to deal with however, he did manage an impressive 8.01@172 followed by an 8.37@168 with the car simply driving off the line.
Off the track throughout the long one day event crowd numbers were simply awesome, with the grand stands on both sides of the track jam packed with excited spectators...
Our pit area was also a busy place to be with hundreds of Pac fans and supporters cramming around our Merchandise trailer looking to score some new gear.
Our buy one get one free special we had going on our Race Jackets went off and by the end of the night everywhere you looked it was a sea of purple and Pac rotor symbols!
Turbo By Garrett also had their stand set up next to our pit area, showing off some of the latest GTX turbos on offer, helping out customers with any enquiries and showing their support for the racers. With several Garrett-equipped cars running PBs on the day Rob was plenty busy fielding questions and taking orders until late in the night.
On top of the awesome racing which took up most of our time Jamboree gives up a great opportunity to interact with our fans and followers. No matter what age, young or old there is certainly a buzz associated with getting up close to the World's fastest rotary which everyone wants to be a part of.
Being a family owned business it's great to see other families out there enjoying a day at the track and we feel that it is an important part of ensuring that the sport and the drag racing scene in general has a long life ahead of it...
With the team now settled in back home in Sydney the boys are working hard to get the car back out and testing at Round seven of the Track Championship at Sydney Dragway on the 13th September. We hope to see you there!
