HYPDUP RETURNING FOR DUTY

When it comes to Datsuns there are not many left out there that are as memorable and iconic as Simon Hays 1600 'HYPDUP', having progressed over a period of 15+ years from a mild-mannered streeter to a dedicated drag car capable of covering the quarter mile in seven seconds thanks to a Pac Performance-built 13B turbo combo.

After campaigning HYPDUP on the strip quite successfully for the last few years Simon and his crew decided to step things up with a new Pro car which is currently in the build, meaning that the old Datsun has satin semi retirement for the last 12 months.

The time has now come though to bring her back out, but rather than concentrate solely on drag racing this time the focus will be on having some serious fun; that meaning plenty of Powercruise action and even a bit of street cruising...And maybe a bit of drag racing thrown in for good measure from time to time.

So what's been changed on the car to convert it from a methanol-slurping race car to a weekend thrasher you ask...? Not a lot really. It's more about refinement and taming things down some-what; kind of curbing her attitude, bringing her in-line and teaching her some manners.

Externally the car will be as you see it here but instead of riding on the Weld race wheels in the photo above, she'll be wearing a set of trick black-on-black FR18 Simmons. Engine wise the car retains its wet sump Cosmo 13B bridgeport combo, controlled by a Haltech Platinum Sport 2000 ECU complete with CDI ignition. On the fueling side, Simon will now be filling the car up at the local servo with E85/Flex Fuel rather than Methanol out of a drum with 2000cc injectors feeding the engine. Other than those small changes and a turbo swap, everything else under the hood is as it was, including the massive 4 inch intercooler, alloy radiator and oil cooler.

Previously running a GForce clutchless manual gearbox and popping the 2-step off the line the 13B was matched to a large Pac-spec Garrett race turbocharger, of which the little 2-rotor had no dramas winding up.

Now with the cars new role the manual box has been switched over for a transbraked C4 3-speed automatic and a smaller GTX42 has been bolted up making for a much punchier combo and of course, the new turbo is equipped with one of our High Flow Shielded Air Filters, slightly modified to suit the six inch compressor cover.

Unfortunately authorities frown upon the use of a side-pipe (something to do with singed leg hairs...) so the little sedan has been fitted with a full three inch exhaust with a large resonator and muffler jammed up snugly under the boot floor.

A little 10L methanol tank in the engine bay certainly wouldn't give you many happy laps at Powercruise so the car has been fitted up with one of our custom alloy tank and triple in-tank pump combos, ready to supply E85 to the thirsty rotor. And with a massive 80+ litre capacity, it means more time cruising, less time filling up!

Inside the cabin it's business as usual, the only change being the Recaro seats replacing the single drivers Kirkey. Autometer guages combined with a Haltech IQ3 Logger Dash keep Simon informed of the going-ons under the bonnet while a Turbosmart EBoost II controls boost levels.

And so the next chapter in the life of HYPDUP is about to start and although she looked sweet, wheels-up on the strip we're sure Simon and his crew will still get plenty of enjoyment thrashing around and blazing tyres on a track of a different kind and cruising the streets of Canberra!

Stay tuned for more updates as they happen on the Pac Performance Facebook page as well as a full feature on this beast once the build is completed.
