J21..........21 YEARS OF SMALL CAR MADNESS

After an abandoned original date of August 27-28, the first weekend in October offered rain free days but miserable conditions with strong winds buffeting both competitors and spectators a like. That said, there was still some great racing and performances!! With a slightly lower entrant list than the original date the PAC team fronted with seven cars to do battle. They were:

George Rehayem  MX6 20B Pro Turbo
Jim Magliveras  Toyota Corolla Pro Compact
Damien McKern  RX2 20B ST 289
Grant Henderson  RX3 13B ST289
Russell Archer  RX4 13B ST289
Simon Hay  Datsun 1600 13B Modified Compact
Steve Barnett  RX3 13B Modified Compact

Saturday qualifying saw George Rehayem come out and make a statement with his first pass in the 'old girl' and a 6.87@195mph, to let the piston powered boys know that the weekend would by no means be a 'lay down misère' for them. With his customary huge burnout and 'million mile an hour' reversing, George had the crowd cheering and the Rotor fans believing victory was there for the taking !!

With the start line not being kind to the smaller-tired cars, Damien with an uncharacteristic 8.9@169,Grant with an 8.2@163 and Russell with a 10.33,all were looking for better results in the 2nd qualifier. In Pro Compact, Jim was having no luck, while in Modified Compact, Simon had a driveline issue and Steve was coming to grips with seat time and a brand new car. Second qualifier saw George and Jim both have issues, while in ST 289, Damien improve to a 8.5@170,still with massive wheel spin, Grant dropped into the 7's with a 7.99@166 and Russell a 9.84@131. In Modified Compact, both Simon and Steve got down the track successfully with 8.23 & 9.0 respectively.

Qualifier three saw George reel off a great 6.74@204 to place him no.3, Jim a struggling 8.25, Grant another 7.99 to place him in position two, Damien an 8.4, position 6 and Russell a 9.77.Simon ran an 8.4 while Steve posted no representative time.

Sunday and eliminations time. Any hope there would be any relief from the persistent wind was dashed and the blustery conditions predominantly blowing straight down the track towards the start line, dictated any record setting times would be hard won. George had a round one win with a 7.12@197, Jim was still struggling, Damien an 8.81@164 loss, Grant an 8.48@160 loss, Russell a 9.99 win, Steve a 15.3 loss and Simon an 8.77 loss. The Chicago Shootout format allows each competitor three rounds of racing and those with three wins or the highest aggregate after those three rounds are automatically matched in the final !!

In round two George pulled out one of the most spectacular wins ever, when one of the parachutes shook loose on launch, was fully billowed by sixty feet ,but still ran 7.2.........simply amazing !! Jim's weekend was done, Damien had a win on a bye, and Grant won, Russell broke out, Simon had a loss and Steve a loss.

Round three would see George take another win with a 6.81@203 and secure a place in the final, Russell win, Grant win with an 8.25, Damien lose with an 8.43, Simon win with an 8.14 and Barnett won with a pb of 8.94.

Finals time and another classic Piston versus Rotor final to highlight the weekend, with George taking on the 2JZ might of Kiwi Rod Harvey. A great reaction time from George held off Rod to half-track, but a fast closing Rod put the result the way of the Rayglass Celica for the second year running.

We would also like to congratulation Malcolm Glassett in his beautiful KINGR1 (R100) who took out 3 trophies in the show and shine competition at J21. He won "Top Rotary", "King of Jambo" and "Top Interior". It has been a long project but the blown 13B is a beautiful machine and sure to take home many more trophies.

The celebration of 21 years of Jamboree has now been done, let's look forward to the next 21 !!! The PAC team would like to thank all their fans both here and overseas, without your support this would simply not happen, so to all those who support the team both in the flesh and on-line, a huge thank you !!

And finally, to the sponsors who have supported the team through thick and thin, Turbosmart, Garrett Turbos, Mazda Australia, Haltech, Castrol EDGE and Custom Bodyworks, a massive thanks, the team is indebted to your ongoing support.
