ONE STEP BACK, TWO STEPS FORWARD FOR CUSTOMERS RX3

We see and hear it all the time, customers coming into the workshop, calling and emailing us looking to purchase or upgrade their setups in their street car with big, fancy aftermarket or custom intakes and oversized turbos. All of this with the pre-conceived notion that bigger is better where as in most circumstances this is NOT the case as we're about to show you.

Unfortunately in this day and age people would rather get their information and ideas off an internet forum, by browsing pics on Google or a recommendation from that one mate we all have that thinks he or she knows everything, rather than speaking to someone with years of experience and R&D under their belt. This is where a lot of people get caught out.

Another thing we see a lot is customers bringing their cars into the workshop disappointed with the results obtained from a setup put together or recommended to them by another workshop. A lot of the time the customer has compared either their HP figures, ET at the track or more importantly for a street car, the feel and drivability of a mates ride to their own which has left them scratching their head, wondering why their car with all the fancy gear is slower, makes less power or is rougher to drive than the car with an OEM intake and smaller turbo etc...

The example we have here is a customers recently purchased RX3 sedan, bought to us as the customer was not happy with the cars performance. Crappy response, rough idle, bad drivability and little to no mid range grunt were just a few of the complaints... The original setup seen below saw the Series 5 13BT mild port accompanied by an oversized custom intake and GT42 turbo, running big boost and sipping on C16 on the street... A setup that would have looked more at home on a late '90s drag car rather than a streeter in 2013. The customer came to us for help, George recommended a plan of action and we went on from there...

The fancy custom intake was replaced with a off-the-shelf IDA throttlebody intake with a Pac performance fabricated alloy plenum which straight away neatened and simplified things in the engine bay.

The original mammoth-sized huffer and poorly-designed turbo manifold was swapped over with one of our Garrett 'street-spec' ball bearing turbos mounted on a Pac Performance exhaust manifold, combined with a Pac Performance shielded filter; keeping things nice and legal.

With the car previously running C16 race fuel, even for street duties the new owner obviously wanted to switch back to something legal so we recommended the change to pump EFlex (E85) and hooked the car up with one of our direct fit E85 fuel tank/triple pump combos.

Fuel lines front to back were also replaced with E85-compatible -8 braided line and Pac Performance alloy fittings, plumbed up to a Turbosmart FPR2000 fuel regulator and flowing into four 2000cc injectors.

The cars ignition was also upgraded to a set of Bosch high output coils, a fresh set of plugs and custom ignition leads made in-house.

Aesthetics-wise the difference is chalk and cheese with the whole engine bay looking much neater. Everything is there for a reason and it all works together perfectly to deliver results as we're about to show you...

On the dyno with the original setup the car made 401rwhp at 25psi on C16 with woeful pull down low and in the midrange as you can see.

With the new and improved setup the result was 420rwhp at 18psi on E85 with a massive increase in low-down and midrange power and torque.

In fact, an increase of over 70rwhp was seen at 5500rpm at half the boost pressure at that point!

And with overall boost levels being significantly lower (from 25 psi to 18 psi), the car is still making almost an extra 20rwhp in the top end, with the engine being under much less stress.

On the street the difference in drivability, response and overall performance is astounding to say the least; in George and Rocky's words,  "It's literally a whole different car! The owners mind is going to be blown when he drives it for the first time!".

The Pac Performance team prides themselves in their ability to deliver results every time, not only when building cars from the ground up but when recommending and carrying out upgrades and repairs to customers' setups.

"We have the team, the tools and the know-how to make things happen; The advice is free, it's up to you if you take it or not... - George Rehayem
