Hands-down, one of the most common things that modified car owners get pickup up for by the boys in blue would have to be an exposed air filter. For a long time now the common 'pod style' air filter has been the easiest way to ensure optimum air flow into your engine with minimal restriction, however apart from the fact that an exposed air filter inside a hot engine bay would be hampering performance, it is also an illegal modification in Australia.
The only fix for this in the past was to construct an air box around the pod filter which can cost you in the range of $300-500 for a quality job carried out by a fabricator, and that's on top of the initial purchase of your $100+ pod filter. Then you also have the inconvenience of your car being off the road while the job is carried out if there is no off-the-shelf option...
