After our awesome weekend at the Winternationals in June we could not wait to get the Pac Performance Mazda6 SP back to the track to try and delve deeper into the six-forties… Unlike the Winternationals we were this time joined by fellow PACsters Elia Hajjar and Andrew Toet in their RX3 coupes for Round 5 of the NSW Track Championship at
Sydney Dragway.
The day started out far from perfect with an overlooked tyre issue seeing us doing some early morning shopping at Rocket Industries for a new set of shoes for the Mazda6 SP. Once sourced though it was a simple swap over and we were pretty much ready for action.
Although we had missed our first round of qualifying, after some quick pre-race strategy discussions from Rocky, George and crew moved into the staging lanes for the first pass of the day.
After one of George’s signature burnouts to get some heat into the virgin tyres, the car was staged before rocketing out of the hole for a PB 0.96 sixty-foot time. Driving nice and straight off the line, George pedaled through some tyre shake in second gear and flew through the traps for an almost effortless 6.502@216. A solid first run!
The second run of the day was not so good. After another sub one second sixty-foot time of 0.99, the car got out of the grove and mid track, resulting in George buttoning off early.
Joining the Mazda6 SP in Super Compact was Elia Hajjar in his 13B ¾ chassis RX3 Coupe.
Not wanting to be over-shadowed Elia put on a show of his own, blasting out a new PB of 7.31@190mph, wheel standing through third gear. With some more track time and tweaking of the combo this car will surely break into the sixes.
Canberra local Andrew Toet was battling it out in the Super Sedan class in his 13BT RX3 coupe.
Andrew had previously run a 9.7@136 on C16 so after making the swap to E85 earlier in the week he was keen to better that time with some new-found power.
Still perfecting his launch tactics, Andrew left the line with a bit too much gusto, getting some serious air under the front tyres and catching himself out off guard in the process. The result was an off run, non indicative of the cars potential. It did make for a cool photo though!
Unfortunately gearbox dramas on his next pass saw Andrew retire early…
During an extended delay while we waited for the first round of eliminations to begin, the guys from Rotorg33k stopped by for a chat, catching up with George and getting a wrap up of the day so far for their event coverage which can be seen on the
Rotorg33k Australia Facebook page.
From here on the day wound out, the sun disappeared and the ambient and track temperature dropped dramatically. Lining up for the first round with the Mazda6 SP and Elia's RX3, the decision was made to call it a day with heavy dew settling on the cars in the staging lanes and the run prior to ours resulting in a top end accident; better to be safe than sorry.
All was not lost though with some good data gathered by all and as always a good post-race feed was had!
Our next outing will be Round 6 of the NSW Championship on the 17th August at Sydney Dragway so be sure to mark the date on your calendar!
Big thanks to the guys at Cackling Pipes for the race shots. Be sure to check out the
