With clear, bright blue skies above, the team headed out for Round 8 of the Sydney Dragway Track Championship with the Mazda6 SP locked and loaded, along with customers Lee Docherty, James Cannavo and Andrew 'The Dentist' Maratos.
Once again utilising the meet as a test day, Rocky, George and the crew were keen to do some laps of the Sydney Dragway strip, gather some data and push for a six-forty of some sort on the home track, however gear selection issues would once again put a dampener on our efforts.
This would prove to be a real pain as track conditions were favourable and incrementals from the front half of the track would show that the car was running as strong as ever to half track. With solid 1.00 and .99 sixty-foot times achieved there was a lot of potential there but only being able to pull four gears in a pass would hamper our top end charge. In saying that though the 20B Mazda6 SP still pulled a 6.75 and a 6.74@174 best for the day out of just those four gears...
James Cannavo had no such issues on the day, pulling his first eight second pass out of the blue, straight off the trailer. A 8.98@161 with a wheel-spinning 1.54 sixty-foot to be more specific...The remainder of his passes on the day would be more flat nines at similar trap speeds.
Running a very angry Nitto 3.2L Stroker RB25/30 fed by a massive Garrett GTX turbo James has been struggling to get the 1000+rwhp to the ground through the factory Nissan IRS and small 26 inch slicks, with the car blazing the tyres on every pass including the 8.98. "Once we sort out the power management side of things to get the sixty-foot down the car will go a lot quicker." - Rocky
Lee Docherty's 13B MX5 would continue to perform well, running a pair of seven-seventies in qualifying. Moving into eliminations though, Lee would fall victim to a similar drama to what the Mazda6 SP suffered at the Jamboree with the 2-Step setting off the staging beams early causing a red light to fall...
Not wanting to call it a day though, Lee came back out for a last grudge run and put down a solid 7.69@174 to end the meet.
Andrew Maratos has been slowly working out the bugs with his 13B RX3 coupe and things have been looking positive but unfortunately at this meet the clutch would let him down, slipping once full power was fed through. Although a temporary fix by turning down the power to get the car down the track was offered to Andrew, the hard-core racer in him simply replied "The hell with that...! Full power or nothing."
The count down is now on to the Australian Nationals on the 1-3/11 and also the Adelaide 4, 6, Rotary & Turbo Nationals on the 23/11. It's going to be a huge month for the team here at Pac Performance so stay tuned for more updates as we come closer to the meetings.
