STEVEN BARNETT BREAKS INTO THE 6'S

Steven Barnett made history on the 27th of August when he ran Australia's first 2-rotor 6 second pass at the Brisbane Jamboree with a 6.998 @198. On his next pass out he then backed it up with a 6.932 @199.6 taking the title of the World's Fastest RX3.

The road to 6's wasn't an easy one for Steve and it was one that started some 5 years earlier when he decided to turn his street driven 8 second coupe into a 3/4 chassis all out race car.

Steve suffered a few minor setbacks in the beginning as he got used to the new car but didn't let anything deter him, remaining focussed on his goal of running a 6 second pass.

At last year’s Melbourne Jamboree, Steve came close to realising this goal, running a new pb at the time of 7.042 @191 (Just a fraction slower than the Dentist's time of 7.040 @193) After that event ,Steve had a break from racing to spend time with his family and new baby but was eager to get back behind the wheel for the Brisbane Jamboree and finish what he had started in Melbourne.

First pass back in the car and Steve ran a leisurely 7.659 @177.
Back in the pits though, the team found an issue with the clutch not engaging correctly so George and the boys went to work pulling out the transmission to fix it. Unfortunately Steve missed his second qualifying pass but was back out for the third and ran a 7.458 @187.

In the first round of the Chicago shootout for Pro Compact, the little yellow coupe blistered down the track to a 7.051 @194 setting a new pb for mph. In the second round the car launched to an amazing 6.998 @198. He had done it, 5 years of hard work and Steve and his team had run Australia's first 13b 6 second pass!!

After a brief celebration back in the pits and a quick interview with the media Steve and his boys turned the car around for the next round.

This run the RX3 looked like it was on a mission passing the traps with an insane 6.932 @199, bettering his previous run and taking the title of the World’s Fastest RX3!

Winning all 3 rounds Steve was through to the finals up against Kelly Bettes in her Datsun 1200.

Kelly had the hole shot on Steve but at halftrack her car got a little loose so she backed off only managing a 7.879 @129. Steve’s car didn't miss a beat racing down the track to a 7.050 @200.23 busting the 200mph barrier and taking the win in Pro Compact.

We would like to again congratulate Steve and his crew on a very well deserved event win and world record. No doubt the boys will be out again soon looking to push the yellow bullet even faster.

Check out Steve running his record pass here.
