2014 X-CHAMPS WRAP-UP

After our success at the Blown vs Turbo meeting, running the 6.44@217 PB the whole team was amped up in the lead-up to the 2014 X-Champs meeting. With the track set to be prepped up perfectly, we were hoping to continue our good run.

Friday saw the team greeted with blue skys and a chill in the air, perfect turbo weather as the team prepped for the first two of three qualifiers.

After a quick meeting, going over data from previous runs a plan of attack was set and the crew moved the Mazda6 SP into the staging lanes, ready to rumble.

The first qualifier is always used as a 'shake-down' pass to get a feel for the track and so the plan was not to push things too hard as we lined up against Rod Harvey in his 2JZ Celica.

As always, George lit the rear bags in spectacular fashion to get things started...

Once moved into stage it was a quick blast of the 2-step and the car left the line arrow-straight for an average 1.01 sixty-foot before motoring down the 1320 with pace

Being such a clean pass the crew were expecting something impressive on the time board and as the 6.353@217 flashed up we were all ecstatic to say the least!!

A new PB for the team and a significant one at that.

After the pass the Mazda6 SP was taken into the scruiteneering shed to have a weight check and fuel test, the usual procedure when a new class record is run at an official event. In this particular instance we set a new record for the BB/SC class.

With the all-clear given by the ANDRA officials it was time to prepare for Q2.

For our second run of the day the goal was to try and drop the sixty-foot time down to a sub-second figure that we're used to seeing the car perform. Although successful at improving to a 0.97 sixty-foot for this pass, a bit too much bite in the clutch saw the car wheel-stand before tyre shake saw George on and off the throttle, rolling through the traps for a 6.64@201.

Q3 saw the team return to Sydney Dragway on Saturday afternoon but unfortunately due to poor weather we were forced to wait it out until later that night to make our last qualifying pass. By that time track temps had dropped dramatically which resulted in George aborting the pass at half track, but not before recording another solid 0.97 sixty-foot.

Even more impressive on this pass for us was running 2.692 to the 330' with a peddle; the quickest the Mazda6 SP has even been! Had George have had a bit more confidence in the track surface (track temps at 15 deg and an oil down on the previous pass) perhaps he would have stayed on it and then who know's what could have been...?

Moving into the competition round on Sunday it was time to do some real racing, looking for the win light rather than records. For round one we lined up against Chris Fakinos in his small tyre R100, with George rolling through for the easy win with a 6.76 protecting his index. From there we moved straight into the finals with two competitors unable to show.

Lining up against Dom Rigoli meant it was an all Garrett final in Super Compact; The boys seeing some great success since making the switch to a new Garrett GTX turbo setup in their 4G63 Eclipse including a new 6.85 PB of their own at the event.

Unfortunately for us, our Nitro Champs/X-Champs curse continued with a failed clutch bearing seeing us unable to move into stage for the final, handing the win to Dom. A real pitty as it would have been a great race!

Although we didn't walk away with a gold christmas tree a new PB, class record and runner-up for Super Compact is something we're all very proud of, making this years X-Champs meeting a successfull one for the Pac Performance team!

Big thanks as usual to the team at Cackling Pipes for the on track photos from the event.
