NITRO CHAMPS 2012

A beautiful weekend in old Sydney town, but for Team McKern, not exactly the result we were looking for........ oh well, can't win 'em all !!! :) Bring on the Winternationals !!!!

Nitro Champs 2012................... Sunshine.............. Spectators............ Superlatives !!!!!!!!!

Sydney turned on her brightest face for what will go down as one of the most memorable meetings in Sydney Dragway's history. Anyone wondering about Drag Racing's future, would have been heartened by the three day event. The Autumn weather was perfect, the crowds returned, the atmosphere returned and the Racers put on an amazing display, resulting in over 30 new track and National records being reset !!

PAC PERFORMANCE was represented in Super Compact by Lee Docherty,13BT MX5, running CC/SM and long-term PAC customer, Gold Coast based Accountant Damien McKern in his GRUMP2, 20B powered RX2, AA/OM. With the event being held over three days and with six entrants, the format allowed for 2 qualifiers on the Friday, 1 on Saturday and 3 rounds of racing on the Sunday. Bringing a very strong performance at the recent Test 'n Tune to the event, Lee made his intentions clear after the two qualifiers, to head the field with a 7.52 and Damien in 2nd with a 7.89. Damien's second qualifier showed a possible p.b. only to be thwarted by an out of shape Rob Novak in the Datsun ute. Damien's evasive action prevented a possible contact, but spoiled his opportunity to improve his performance....... oh well, that is racing !!

Saturday's single qualifier didn't result in any improvement, so Lee remained top qualifier, taking out the top qualifier medal, and with Sunday seeding’s set for eliminations, and with only five competitors left, Lee would have the solo, while Damien would meet Gina in the RX7.

Sunday,(and finals day) once again dawned with perfect Drag Racing weather and saw Damien defeat Gina in the first round, while Lee and Damien would meet in the second round. While the perfect scenario would have been to have the PAC team-mates in the final, it was not to be, and while Damien red-lit out, another good tree and consistent performance by Lee, saw him line-up in the final against Rob Novak in the Datsun 1200 ute. Leaving the best for last, Lee ran a p.b.7.49 e.t. with a 1.07 60ft short time, while Rob red-lit, leaving rookie Lee to claim his first Gold Christmas tree !!! Congratulations to Lee, Anne-Maree and Benny for a job well done !!!

Next month on Queens Birthday weekend at Willowbank Raceway, Queensland, the Southern Hemisphere's biggest Drag Race meet, The Fuchs Winternationals will take place, and both Lee and Damien will be competing, so if you are there, look them up and say hello !! The teams hope to see you there !!!
