THE FUCHS NATIONALS 2011

15th September 2011

Australia's oldest and most prestigious Drag Racing event, The Nationals was held at Sydney Dragway over the weekend of the 9th through the 11th of September. While diabolical weather over Thursday night and into Friday morning made racing look unlikely, clearing conditions on Friday afternoon allowed competitors in Group 2,3 and 4 to one qualifier, although a serious accident to long-time Rotary campaigner, Grant Williams, bought proceedings to an early conclusion, forcing officials to once again amend the weekend schedule.

After a scramble to get to the track and hurriedly set up the MX6, the PAC team pulled into the staging lanes behind long-term PAC customer Damien McKern in his distinctive 20B RX2, GRUMP2.With both cars lined up together, the stage was set for a great side by side pass, but while Damien ran a 7.96@179mph pass, George in the MX6, found a violent launch and move towards the wall, left him with no option but to abort the run.

With the weekend shortened by the bad weather on Friday and the resulting loss of time, only one qualifier would be run on the Saturday, with the six cars in Super Compact going straight into eliminations on Sunday. George made a very good pass in Saturday's qualifier, running 6.70@204mph to put him 0.6 under the index, while fellow PAC team member, Damien McKern ran a 0.2 under index 7.89@180mph pass.

Sunday would see three rounds of racing with the PAC team members Damien McKern and George Rehayem seeded to meet each other in the first round, not the ideal scenario, as one would be back on the trailer after the very first race!! After an uncharacteristic slow reaction time, severe tyre shake and a brilliant driving job, George fell just slightly short of catching Damien's flying little 'Green Machine', but still ran a great 6.73 pass, which would reset the class index, while Damien's 7.8 was quicker again for him.

Damien would get a bye into the final, just having to accept the 'green', back out,(which he duly did) but then performed a three point turn and drive the car back to scrutineering, much to the amazement of his crew and the crowd !!

The final was to be an all Rotor and all 20B final, with Damien's 28X9 tired RX2 pitted against the full chassis, big tired RX7 of Jason Both. A 0.2 reaction by Jason to a 0.3 by Damien saw the hole shot advantage carried to a 0.08 advantage at the stripe and a gold Christmas tree to Jason, but also a new p.b. to Damien of 7.77@180.93mph.

While 2011 has had many highs and many lows for the PAC team, the continued support from sponsors, Castrol Edge, Turbosmart, Garrett Turbos, Mazda Australia, Haltech, Custom Bodyworks and their myriad of fans around the world, makes the team more determined than ever to go forward and set new benchmarks.

We look forward to seeing you at the re-scheduled Jamboree at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of October.
